My latest scarf is a bit of a happy accident. Collapse weave without even trying 🙂 Collapse weave is where the fabric naturally forms peaks and troughs as though it has been pleated or shirred, It does that because of the tensions within the warp and weft threads rather than any treatment.
It started off with a skein of hand-painted yarn that I bought at a weaver’s market. It’s from the same person who dyed the skein used in my orange & blue scarf.

About 12 years ago I bought a fantastic yet very complicated pattern for shell gloves. And I’ve finally made them!!! It’s a mixture of relief, rapture, disbelief, adrenalin rush and blind panic all rolled into one. Don’t believe me – just check out the photo of the pattern pieces!!
The gloves are designed to be used as a weatherproof shell for your gloves. I have a pair of the mitten styles which I bought when I first started cross-country skiing. Plus, I reverse engineered a pair for DH). They are great, but I find the mittens cumbersome. The glove style of this pattern sounded perfect. Especially this part of the description – “Unlike ‘2 dimensional’ overmitts that are flat and awkward, these are sculpted to fit the hand comfortably in a slightly curved finger position”. See all those curvy pattern pieces on the left of the photo? They are the finger gussets. The three shapes in the centre of the photo form the thumb, complete with a bend. Scary, no? I joined the Pattern Stash contest on PR to help me use up some of the patterns that I’ve put in the ‘gunnawundae’ bucket. I have no desire to win, just to challenge myself to use the patterns I have. Many tie in with my winter sewing plans, so that is a big bonus. Yay! I just finished the other hut boot. It’s been a labour of love so I guess it makes a good Valentines day present.

I think I probably did too good of a job on the hut boots. He’s been showing them around and now I have orders. Even saying that they have to BYO goose down wasn’t a deterrent. Tadahhh! We have one left hut boot ready for Christmas. He’ll have to wait for the second as we’ve just started the first heatwave of the summer. For the past year or so DH has been asking me to make a pair of bivvy boots for snow camping. Wha? Probably best described as a sleeping bag for your feet – aka. hut boots. The ones he wanted were goose down filled and cost about $150. He tells me the insulation is 1-2″ thick. Can’t find a comercial pattern that would help much, especially as the insulation is so thick.
