A double-weave rag-bag

Sorry about the title, but it was the easiest way to describe it. Basically it is a small tote woven using strips of an unwanted fabric. Add in a little experimenting with double-weave to weave the body of the back as a tube and you get a double-weave rag-bag! Continue reading “A double-weave rag-bag”

Handwoven: Happy accident scarf

My latest scarf is a bit of a happy accident. Collapse weave without even trying 🙂 Collapse weave is where the fabric naturally forms peaks and troughs as though it has been pleated or shirred, It does that because of the tensions within the warp and weft threads rather than any treatment.

It started off with a skein of hand-painted yarn that I bought at a weaver’s market. It’s from the same person who dyed the skein used in my orange & blue scarf.

Controlled Exposure 75 – Goretex Shell Gloves (photo heavy)

About 12 years ago I bought a fantastic yet very complicated pattern for shell gloves. And I’ve finally made them!!!  It’s a mixture of relief, rapture, disbelief, adrenalin rush and blind panic all rolled into one. Don’t believe me – just check out the photo of the pattern pieces!!

The gloves are designed to be used as a weatherproof shell for your gloves.  I have a pair of the mitten styles which I bought when I first started cross-country skiing. Plus,  I reverse engineered a pair for DH).   They are great, but I find the mittens cumbersome.  The glove style of this pattern sounded perfect.  Especially this part of the description – “Unlike ‘2 dimensional’ overmitts that are flat and awkward, these are sculpted to fit the hand comfortably in a slightly curved finger position”.  See all those curvy pattern pieces on the left of the photo?   They are the finger gussets.  The three shapes in the centre of the photo form the thumb, complete with a bend. Scary, no? Continue reading “Controlled Exposure 75 – Goretex Shell Gloves (photo heavy)”

The glove challenge begins ….

I joined the Pattern Stash contest on PR to help me use up some of the patterns that I’ve put in the ‘gunnawundae’ bucket.  I have no desire to win, just to challenge myself to use the patterns I have.  Many tie in with my winter sewing plans, so that is a big bonus.  Pattern hacking was ruled out ( a blessing in disguise) so I started looking at some of my lingerie and accessory patterns.  Here is the short list… Continue reading “The glove challenge begins ….”

The hut boots are finished!!!!!!

Yay! I just finished the other hut boot. It’s been a labour of love so I guess it makes a good Valentines day present.

We had a run of days last week that were over 40C and he asked me about three time when I was going to make the other boot. So I think that when the next heat wave rolls around, I’m going to make him wear them 🙂  Sound fair???? Continue reading “The hut boots are finished!!!!!!”

Goretex Gloves and Gaiters: The next challenge

I think I probably did too good of a job on the hut boots.  He’s been showing them around and now I have orders.  Even saying that they have to BYO goose down wasn’t a deterrent.  Now DH has given a pair of 30 year old Goretex overmits and a manky pair of gaiters.  My next ‘challenge’ was to  create new ones. Continue reading “Goretex Gloves and Gaiters: The next challenge”

Hut boots: Final version

Tadahhh!  We have one left hut boot ready for Christmas.  He’ll have to wait for the second as we’ve just started the first heatwave of the summer.  As much as I love him, I’m not willing to be stuffing goose down into the liners when its above 400C.    Here is a pic of the final product. You want me to make what???

For the past year or so DH has been asking me to make a pair of bivvy boots for snow camping.  Wha? Probably best described as a sleeping bag for your feet – aka. hut boots.  The ones he wanted were goose down filled and cost about $150.  He tells me the insulation is 1-2″ thick.  Can’t find a comercial pattern that would help much, especially as the insulation is so thick.  I was hoping he’d just buy them, but alas no.   Somehow these have turned into his Christmas present 😦 Continue reading “You want me to make what???”
